Olly Stone ripped through the Surrey batting line-up in the County Championship today (August 21), claiming figures of 6-44 as Surrey were all out for just 162.

The England-capped quick was a constant threat against a Surrey side packed full of international talent. Defending a first-innings total of just 184, Stone got his Nottinghamshire side off to a dream start, with Dom Sibley nicking Stone’s second delivery through to the keeper to leave Surrey 0-1 late on in day one.

Rory Burns and Adam Thomas had started to push Notts onto the back foot as they shared a 59 run partnership, taking Surrey to 84-2 before a short ball from Stone had Burns caught at third man by Dillon Pennington. Sensing a shift in momentum, Stone drew the edge of Ollie Pope’s edge to complete a double wicket maiden that brought his side firmly back into the contest, leaving Surrey to 84-4.

Stone’s threatening line and length continued to pay dividends as he knocked the impressive looking Adam Thomas’ middle stump clean out of the ground with a nip-backer to prevent him from reaching 50, as Surrey instead found themselves 113-5. He was soon on a hat-trick, with the Indian overseas player Mahipal Lomror edging to third slip to land a golden duck on debut, whilst Stone ran off gleefully in celebration of his five wicket haul.

Stone brilliance gives Nottinghamshire unlikely first-innings lead

With clapping Notts supporters in the background for his hat-trick ball, Stone caught the edge of Josh Blake’s bat but it did not carry to the four slips and instead raced away towards the third-man boundary for four. Instead of facing down the barrel of a large first-innings deficit Stone had dragged Nottinghamshire into the driving seat, and now it was Surrey on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

After some dogged resistance from the Surrey lower-order, including a six off the spin bowling off Liam Patterson-White from Tom Lawes, Stone had his off-stump cartwheeling to give his team an invaluable 22 run first innings lead, and leave Surrey all out for 162.

Although conditions have so far has favoured the bowling side, Stone made the most of them, and proved the most threatening bowler in the Nottinghamshire attack. He twice took two wickets in an over, disturbed the batter’s furniture twice and proved nigh on impossible to get away, going for a little over two runs per over and bowling seven maidens in the process.
