England Test spinner Liam Dawson has announced his retirement from first-class cricket with immediate effect, meaning he will not be available for Hampshire during the remainder of their County Championship campaign.
The England all-rounder, who has represented his country four times in the Test format including an appearance against India last year, will continue to represent Hampshire in white-ball competitions. Dawson was also recalled to England's white-ball squad in 2025, and took 10 wickets during the T20 World Cup in India earlier this year.
"I’ve decided to retire from first-class cricket," read a statement from Dawson. "It’s a decision that I haven’t taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white ball cricket, the time is right. I’m extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years. I’m fully committed to playing white ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we’ve had."
Dawson retirement worsens Hampshire Championship concerns
Dawson's decision to retire from first-class cricket during the first block of County Championship matches this season leaves Hampshire in a bind. In terms of both runs and wickets, he has been one of the most prolific players on the county circuit for several years, with more than 10,000 runs and 380 wickets in the format.
As Hampshire's premier spinner and genuine all-rounder, Dawson is a one-of-a-kind player in their squad who both strengthens their batting and bowling. In their only Championship match so far this season that Dawson hasn't featured in, Hampshire relied on fellow off-spinning all-rounder Felix Organ to send down their spin overs. His figures in that game read 1-143 in the only innings he bowled.
Having narrowly avoided relegation from Division One last year, Hampshire currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table, with one win from their first five games. They're 12 points adrift of ninth-placed Leicestershire.
"Liam has been an outstanding servant to Hampshire Cricket," said Giles White, Hampshire Director of Cricket. "To have played over 200 First Class games for this county speaks volumes about his dedication and quality. He leaves a huge hole in the team and will be hard to replace, especially for the remainder of this Championship season. He is the only Hampshire player of the modern era to represent the Club in over 200 First-Class appearances, which underlines just how rare an achievement that is at this level."
