Sam Cook celebrates taking a wicket for Essex during County Championship 2026

Sam Cook blasted through Warwickshire on the third day of Essex's County Championship match at Edgbaston, with a five-for that set up the game for a fascinating final day.

After Essex took a narrow lead into the second innings, Warwickshire's top-order was decimated by Cook after Essex themselves had collapsed from 110-3 overnight on day two to 202 all-out on day three. Cook reduced Warwickshire to 14-3 in the first 10 overs of their response, dismissing Alex Davies, Dan Mousley and Sam Hain in consecutive overs.

Essex's progress was then stalled by Beau Webster, the Australia international scoring 91 off 123 balls. Nevertheless, Essex continued to chip away as partnerships formed, before Cook cleaned up the tail. He bowled Webster as the eighth wicket to fall, and had Keith Barker caught-behind. Warwickshire finished on 220 all-out, setting Essex a target of 206 to win.

Cook had more of a role to play on day three, when he was sent out as nightwatch to open Essex's innings. He saw out the day, but was removed early on day three, as Keith Barker took three wickets in his opening over. That left Essex 16-3, still needing 190 to win.

Sam Cook boosts Test selection bid with crucial Championship five-for

Cook has taken 14 wickets at 18.85 from his first three matches of the 2026 County Championship. He's one of a group of seamers chasing selection for England's first Test series of the summer against New Zealand. After making his long-awaited Test debut against Zimbabwe last year, he wasn't selected in a starting XI for their series against India, and wasn't selected for either their Ashes or Lions tour of Australia over the winter.

Speaking ahead of the start of the season, Cook told ESPNcricinfo: "I'm desperate to bang down that door again, because it's [Test debut] only fuelled the fire to go on and play even more for England."
