Shoaib Bashir was at the centre of an incident which cost his side five penalty runs in his debut game for Derbyshire in the opening round of the 2026 County Championship.
The incident occurred early on day three of the opening round fixture between Derbyshire and Worcestershire, with Worcestershire 120-2 in response to Derbyshire's 625-8 declared.
Opener Dan Lategan was closing in on three figures when he pulled a ball from Mohammad Abbas out to deep square. Bashir sprinted round from fine leg to field the ball, which was trickling towards Anuj Dal who was coming in from the rope. As Dal picked the ball up, Bashir skipped over it and shaped as if he was throwing the ball in to the wicket.
After Dal had returned the ball in to the keeper, Lategan and the other batter in the middle, Adam Hose complained to the umpire. After both umpires had a lengthy discussion with Derbyshire captain Harry Came, a five-run penalty was imposed, with Bashir deemed guilty of deception by pretending to throw the ball in.
What law did Shoaib Bashir break on Derbyshire debut?
Bashir was found to be in breach of MCC Law 41.5, which covers 'Deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of a batter'. "It is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batter after the striker has received the ball," reads Law 41.5.1.
The sanction for this is five penalty runs awarded to the batting side, in addition to any runs completed before the offence took place.
Worcestershire went on to score 312 in their first innings, with Lategan dismissed 11 runs short of a century. Bashir took his first wicket for Derbyshire later in the day, drawing an outside edge off Brett D'Oliveira. Derbyshire enforced the follow on, with Worcestershire beginning Day Four on 68-1, still needing another 245 to make Derbyshire bat again.
