Tom Westley became the first player to be replaced under the ECB’s new injury and significant life event substitution regulations during the opening day of the 2026 County Championship season.

Essex skipper Westley retired not out on 28 after a ball from Hampshire’s Sonny Baker struck his glove, ruling him out for the remainder of the game.

Noah Thain replaced Westley under the ECB’s trial scheme. Thain is permitted to bat in the first innings but will not be allowed to bowl during the match, with the guidelines suggesting that the replacement player must be a like-for-like. While Thain is a handy seamer, picking up 18 wickets in 19 first-class matches, he replaces Westley, primarily a batter, which restricts him from bowling in the match.

Essex, who were asked to bat first at Southampton, did not get off to the greatest start after openers Dean Elgar and Paul Walter departed on 2 and 9, respectively.

Westley, the Essex captain, played five Tests for England in 2017, scoring 193 runs at 24.12 with a high score of 59.

What are the new subbed-out regulations for the 2026 County Championship?

The regulations, introduced for the 2026 season, form part of a wider ICC initiative testing injury replacements in first-class cricket, with similar schemes already implemented in other countries. The ECB’s trial extends the rules to cover players leaving the field for illness or significant life events, including leaving for the illness of a family member or the birth of a child.

Under the new system, injury and illness replacements must be approved by the medical officers of both counties. Substitutions for significant life events require authorisation from the chief executives of both clubs. Substituted players are subject to an eight-day stand-down period during which they are unavailable for selection by their county.
