Tom Norton celebrates debut hat-trick

Eighteen-year-old Glamorgan seamer Tom Norton made history on day two of the county's fixture against Somerset, becoming the first player in 120 years to take a hat-trick on County Championship debut.

Tom Norton amazes on first-class debut

Norton blitzed through Somerset's top-order, reducing them to 3-7 to turn the game on its head on a day where 17 wickets fell.

Glamorgan had begun the day by taking the final wicket of Somerset's first innings, before they were bowled out for 229. Somerset, with a first innings lead of 125, began their second innings with an hour left of play on day two.

For the second time in the game, James Rew opened the batting, having been bowled for four the previous day on his first outing at the top of the order. This time, his innings ended in a 13-ball duck when Norton found his outside edge, Asa Tribe taking a smart catch at second slip.

Norton's next ball saw him find the outside edge again, this time of Tom Lammonby's bat, with keeper Chris Cooke taking a simple catch to send Lammonby bat for a golden duck. With Norton on a hat-trick, Archie Vaughan came out to face his next delivery. Attempting to turn the ball away into the leg side, Vaughan was struck on the pad and immediately given out by the umpire.

That wicket made Norton the first player to take a hat-trick on County Championship debut in 120 years, with Herbert Sedgwick the last player to do so in 1906. Norton is also the youngest ever player to take a hat-trick on fist-class debut, at 18 years and 274 days old.

Somerset lose grip on second evening

Somerset's problems weren't over for the day. They lost Joshua Thomas five overs later, Ryan Hadley taking the wicket this time. Jack Leach came in as the nightwatch, but was dismissed for a six-ball duck. Will Smeed became Norton's fourth wicket of the innings before the end of play, leaving Somerset 32-6 overnight.

Having been in control of the game an hour earlier, Somerset ended the day with a lead of 157 and only four wickets remaining in their second innings.
