India wicketkeeper Narayan Jagadeesan missed out on a double hundred in the Duleep Trophy, falling to a run out three short of the milestone.
The 29-year-old, who plays for Tamil Nadu in state domestic cricket, gave South Zone a big push with his knock against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025 semi-final 1, currently being played on Ground 1 of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence.
Jagadeesan, who averaged 47.5 coming into the game – with ten centuries to show – first put on a century opening stand with Tanmay Agarwal, and repeated it with Devdutt Padikkal for the second wicket. On day two, the South Zone vice-captain looked set for a double century, having kept an attack featuring Test seamer Anshul Kamboj and the in-form Auqib Nabi at bay. Just three runs away from his double century though, he was run out by Nishant Sindhu, the former India U19 all-rounder. Soon after, lunch was called.

Jagadeesan, who ended day one on 128, hit 16 fours and two sixes in his 352-ball effort, but would be kicking himself for missing his third 200+ score in first-class cricket. He fell 17 short of a double in 2020, but breached that mark in 2024 with an unbeaten 245. A week later, he hit a mammoth 321, becoming Tamil Nadu's highest individual scorer in first-class cricket. He finished the last Ranji season with 674 runs at 56, with five fifties aside from the two big scores.
His white-ball exploits at the domestic level are well known too, none more than his record-breaking 277 in the 2022/23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, the highest score ever in List A cricket. It was part of five consecutive centuries in that tournament, also a record.
Jagadeesan got his big break when he was called up as backup wicketkeeper for the injured Rishabh Pant for the fifth England Test at the Oval last month. While he did not play, it was Jagadeesan's first stint with the national team.
At Lunch, South Zone were 391-5 in 115 overs. Elsewhere, Central Zone are 21-0 in response to West Zone's 438, where Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scored with 184.
