East Zone's Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for an 81-ball 92 while trying to clear the boundary in the first innings of the Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone on Monday, August 31.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi falls in the nineties ... again!

After Central Zone put up 266 on the opening day, 15-year-old Sooryavanshi got East Zone off to a rapid start in his second Duleep Trophy innings. Just before reaching fifty, he got a reprieve when Yash Rathod dropped a sitter at point off Saransh Jain.

He completed his half century off 42 balls. At 15 years 157 days, he became the youngest to score a fifty in Duleep Trophy. The record was previously held by Laxman Singh (16 years 23 days, for Central Zone against North Zone in 1968/69).

Sooryavanshi was ultimately dismissed for 92 trying to dispatch Harsh Dubey for a six, and was the first wicket to fall with East Zone on 161. His opening partner Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 69, but Central Zone have since picked up wickets at regular intervals to reduce East Zone to 260-8. They still trail by six runs.

This was the seventh time that Sooryavanshi was dismissed in the 90s, all of them since November 2025. Though he was distraught after falling eight runs shy of a maiden first-class hundred, this wasn't the first time that he attempted a six in the 90s.

Against Meghalaya in the Ranji Trophy, Sooryavanshi was trapped in front, but most of Sooryavanshi's dismissals in the 90s have come while trying to attack. In his most recent Duleep Trophy dismissal to Dubey, he went for a six. Before that against Sri Lanka A, he was caught at mid-off. In the 2026 IPL, he was caught at long-on against LSG, and at deep-third against SRH in the Eliminator and GT in Qualifier 2.
