Rishabh Pant was run out attempting a risky single just before lunch on day three of the Lord's Test, a dismissal that cost India a commanding position.
Resuming on their overnight score of 145 for three in 43 overs, India navigated the first session almost unscathed – until a disastrous run-out in the 66th over, the last one before lunch. At 248-3, Pant, batting in his trademark free-flowing style, nudged the third ball of the over from Shoaib Bashir to cover and called for a single. Batting at the end was KL Rahul, on 98.
Pant stopped for a moment at the start but went on with it, chancing Stokes’ arm. The England captain seized the moment: he swooped in, fired a flat, one-bounce throw at the non-striker’s stumps, and caught Pant short.
The wicketkeeper-batter fell for a 112-ball 74, ending a gritty knock that came despite an injury to his left index finger, one that had forced India to field Dhruv Jurel as his substitute in the first innings.
The ball to which Pant was run out was a full delivery from Bashir, and it was quite close to Stokes as well. Online, the reactions to the dismissal suggested Pant may have risked the run to give Rahul the strike, so the opener could reach a century before lunch.

Social media reacts to Rishabh Pant's run out at Lord's
Rishabh Pant wanted KL Rahul to complete his century before going to lunch. But unfortunately he took a tight run and got out. Yes, he could save his wicket, but brilliant innings. #RishabhPant #pant #INDvsENG #ENGvsIND #TestCricket #BenStokes #KLRahul pic.twitter.com/TXUzIsa4Tm

Ben Stokes aims and fires at the stumps and Rishabh Pant is out! ❌ pic.twitter.com/Z9JWwV9aS4
Rishabh Pant in some ways a victim of the overrate there. He doesn't risk that single unless KL Rahul is in danger of going to lunch short of his century, and KL Rahul isn't in danger of going to lunch short of his century unless England only bowl 11 overs an hour in the session

Such a shame it ended in a run out but really important partnership in the context of the game. Great display of grit and determination while battling the pain from @RishabhPant17 👏🏻 #ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/kabx0Fja4w

Pathetic. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC. Desperate for a milestone. No one was mature enough to realise that it’s not worth it.

Serving advantage on a platter. Absolutely ridiculous.
THAT IS MADNESS. A run out while giving Rahul the strike on 98. NO NO NO

Rahul had to wait until the over after lunch to reach his milestone, his 10th Test century. In the process, he joined a list of 13 visiting batters with two or more hundreds at Lord’s. He now stands alongside contemporaries like Steve Smith, while India’s Dilip Vengsarkar holds the record (3 centuries) for a visiting batter at the venue. Off his very next ball, however, he perished edging a tossed-up ball from Bashir to Harry Brook at slips. India slipped to 254-5.
