Watch highlights: The first England-India Test at Headingley, Leeds, hangs in the balance after the end of day three.

England began the third day at 209-3, aiming to get close to and possibly overtake India's first-innings score of 471. Harry Brook smashed Prasidh Krishna for a six in the first over of the day to get things underway. Krishna, however, bounced back to pick up the wicket of centurion Ollie Pope. Ben Stokes then didn't last long, perishing to a Mohammed Siraj away-nibbler.

Jamie Smith and Brook then added a quick 73 for the sixth wicket before the England wicketkeeper fell into the short-ball trap, skying a bouncer to the deep square leg fielder. Brook, meanwhile, was dropped twice as he approached his hundred and took on Siraj. Despite all his luck, he wasn't able to get to three figures, top-edging a pull down the throat of fine leg for 99.

England added 67 more runs following Brook's wicket, reaching 465, just six short of India's total. Jasprit Bumrah took his 14th Test five-for, finishing with 5-83, his second-most expensive five-wicket haul.

In the second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn't repeat his heroics from day one, nicking a Brydon Carse delivery for just four. Sai Sudharsan got off a pair with a streaky boundary first ball, but settled in nicely after that, looking set for a big one on debut. Stokes, however, stuck to his leg side plan against Sudharsan and got him to flick one in the air, getting him caught at mid-wicket for 30 off 48.

Three overs later, umpires called stumps as the steady drizzle got heavier. India will head into day four with a lead of 96, with KL Rahul looking fluent on 47 and Gill having just arrived, batting at six.
