Chris Woakes celebrates taking a Test wicket for England

England have recalled Jamie Overton to their Test squad for the marquee series against India which begins later this month, with Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse also selected.

The 14-player squad for the first Test, which will begin at Headingley on June 20, also includes Jacob Bethell, who was unavailable for England's one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month due to his IPL commitments. Bethell last played Test cricket in New Zealand, where he made three half-centuries in his debut series.

Overton has been included in anticipation that he will recover from the broken finger he sustained during England's ODI against the West Indies last week. The Surrey bowling all-rounder hasn't been included in the Test side since earning his so far only Test cap against New Zealand at Headingley in 2022. He took two wickets in a memorable England win, dismissing Devon Conway and Tom Latham.

Carse and Woakes have also been included in the squad, having both been injured in the Zimbabwe game. Woakes has also been selected for the England Lions game against India A in Northampton later this week, having taken six wickets in the first match of that series in Canterbury on return from an ankle injury. He will feature in the match alongside Josh Tongue, also in the Test squad. England's seam ranks have taken several hefty blows over the last few weeks, with news that Gus Atkinson will miss at least the first match of the India series with a right hamstring injury, to add to the injuries keeping Jofra Archer and Mark Wood out of action.

Matthew Potts is the only notable absentee from England's squad for the Zimbabwe game. Potts featured in the two opening ODIs of the series against West Indies, taking two wickets in England's win at The Oval. Sam Cook has retained his place in the squad after making his international debut against Zimbabwe.

Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley have also retained their places after both scoring centuries against Zimbabwe.
