Trailing 0-1, India are set to play the second Test of their ongoing five-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Here’s a look at their record at the venue.
At Headingley, in the series opener, India lost by five wickets despite their batters scoring five centuries – the first time this has happened in Test cricket. Only once before has a team lost a Test after scoring four hundreds: Australia against England in Melbourne in 1928.
Barring Jasprit Bumrah, who took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, India's bowling looked flat. His wicketless figures in the second innings further exposed their lacklustre attack, as England completed their second-highest successful Test chase of 373.
With Bumrah not guaranteed to play all matches due to workload management, India head into the second Test with plenty of headaches to address. They might also be tempted to bring in wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav for variety, along with left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh to add a different angle. However, the venue for the second Test – Edgbaston in Birmingham – has not been a happy hunting ground for India.

How have India fared at Edgbaston in the past?
India have played eight Tests at Edgbaston, Birmingham, without a single victory, losing seven and drawing one. Their winless struggles extend to two other venues: Old Trafford, Manchester (four losses and five draws in nine Tests) and The Rose Bowl, Southampton (three defeats in as many matches).
Home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club, the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, England, was established in 1882 and has hosted international cricket since 1902. India have crossed the 300-run mark only twice in 16 innings at Edgbaston. Their lowest score of 92 at the venue came in their very first match there, with the sole draw coming in 1986, a series they eventually won.

In 2011, Alastair Cook scored 294 for England, powering them to a 242-run innings victory. India conceded 710-7, the highest Test innings total at Edgbaston.
The last time India played here in 2022, England chased down 378 in just 76.4 overs with seven wickets remaining, achieving their highest successful fourth-innings chase in Tests.
