Yashasvi Jaiswal is closing in on 2,000 Test runs in record time after a scintillating century on Day 1 of the Headingley Test between India and England.
Jaiswal continues to capture the imagination of the fans with his rapid start to his Test career. Playing his first match in England, in Leeds, he struck a 158-ball 101 to set the tone for India in the opening day of the series. The visitors reached 359-3 at the end of the day. In the process, he joined an elite group of Indian openers – including Murali Vijay, Vijay Manjrekar, Sourav Ganguly, and Sandeep Patil – who have scored centuries in their first Test on English soil.
Against England at home, Jaiswal scored 712 runs at an average of 89 – the third-highest by an Indian batter in a Test series. With this innings, his tally against England now stands at 813 runs in 10 innings at 90.33. He now holds the highest Test average against England (minimum 500 runs), surpassing Don Bradman’s 89.78.

Among his five Test centuries, this is the first time Jaiswal has been dismissed for a score below 160 - his previous big knocks include 171 against West Indies in Roseau (2023), 209 versus England in Visakhapatnam (2024), an unbeaten 214 against England in Rajkot (2024), and 161 against Australia in Perth (2024).
Yashasvi Jaiswal's Headingley hundred was no feat of monk-like self-denial, but it did mark him out as the truest heir to Sachin Tendulkar's crown of pure batsmanship, writes @Ben_Wisden.#ENGvIND https://t.co/lOE1kFGydg

How close is Jaiswal to matching the fastest to 2,000 Test runs post-war record?
The record for the fewest matches taken to reach 2,000 Test runs is currently 15, held by Don Bradman. West Indies’ George Headley, having done so in 17 matches, follows next. In the post-war era, the record belongs to two Australians – Michael Hussey and Marnus Labuschagne, both reaching the mark in their 20th Test. Among them, Hussey is slightly ahead in doing so in an innings fewer (33) as compared to Labuschagne. In terms of matches, the duo jointly occupy the third spot in the overall list.
With one innings still to bat, Jaiswal could match the post-war record for fastest to 2,000 Test runs (currently 20 Tests). He needs 101 more runs to reach the landmark - exactly what he managed in the first innings. Should he fall short at Headingley, the next closest record is 21 Tests (joint fifth-fastest), shared by Viv Richards and Graeme Pollock.
Among Jaiswal's contemporaries, Brook also features in this list, having reached the landmark in his 22nd Test. In doing so, the newly named England white-ball captain matched Kevin Pietersen. Nine players have reached 2,000 Test runs in their 22nd Test, the joint seventh fastest to the tally.
