India captain Shubman Gill went past Virat Kohli to break a national record in his second Test as skipper.

After being put in by England skipper Ben Stokes, India reached 310-5 at stumps on day one as they looked to hit back after a five-wicket loss at Headingley last week.

Gill led the way with a century, remaining unbeaten on 114, with Ravindra Jadeja on 41 for company. The pair began day two (Thursday) as they meant to go on, before Jadeja departed for 89 shortly before lunch.

Gill was on 168 at the break, and picked up where he left off in the second session. In the 12th over after lunch, he pulled a short ball from Josh Tongue down to fine leg to bring up a double ton – his fourth in first-class cricket and first in Test cricket.

In the following over, when he tucked Shoaib Bashir away for a single, Gill went past Virat Kohli's 200, to record the highest score by an Indian Test captain away from home.

He was finally dismissed for 269 off 387 balls, having hit 30 fours and three sixes. Only four captains have made higher scores in Test matches away from home.
