Jasprit Bumrah of India reacts during Day Five of the 1st Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Headingley on June 24, 2025 in Leeds, England

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss a Test or two in the ongoing Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy against England due to workload concerns. Here's how many Tests he's missed since his debut.

India handed Bumrah his Test debut during the 2018 Cape Town Test against South Africa. Since then, he has taken 210 wickets at an average of 19.60, becoming the only bowler to cross 200 Test wickets with a sub-20 average. Given his unique catapult-like action, Bumrah is injury-prone. To preserve him and manage his workload, India primarily deploys him in SENA tours, with only occasional appearances in high-profile home series.

Bumrah’s recent injury struggles emerged during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he captained India in both the series opener and final Test. On that tour, he claimed 32 wickets at 13.06 – standing out as India's lone bright spot in their 1-3 defeat – before being ruled out of the final Test midway with a stress-related back injury. The setback also forced him to miss both the 2025 Champions Trophy and the Mumbai Indians' opening few matches of IPL 2025.

When Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket alongside several other seniors, Bumrah emerged as a frontrunner to succeed him as captain. However, India ultimately chose Shubman Gill - another strong contender - with chief selector Ajit Agarkar citing the need for a long-term leadership solution. This decision considered Bumrah's workload management, as Agarkar revealed the pace spearhead might not feature in all five Tests of the England tour. The fast bowler later confirmed the BCCI had approached him about the Test captaincy, but he voluntarily withdrew from permanent consideration, prioritising the team's best interests.

How many Tests has Jasprit Bumrah missed since his debut?

Since Bumrah's debut, India have played 72 Tests, with the fast bowler featuring in 46 and missing 26 (around 36 per cent).

Of the 46 Tests Bumrah has played in, India have won 20, lost 22 and drawn four. On the other hand, they have won 18, lost five, and drawn three of the 26 Tests he has missed.

Given India's reliance on him primarily for overseas conditions, nearly three-fourths (73.9 per cent) of his Test appearances (34) have come away from home, including the 2021 World Test Championship final against New Zealand, which was played at a neutral venue (Southampton, England).

How many home Tests Bumrah has missed?

In home matches, after being rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in 2018, Bumrah didn’t play the subsequent two Tests against West Indies and was ruled out of the 2019 South Africa Test series and Bangladesh series due to a minor stress fracture in his lower back.

Heaving made his home Test debut against England in 2021, Bumrah played two of the first three matches in the series before asking the team to release him for the remaining two matches owing to personal reasons.

After playing the two home Tests against Sri Lanka in March 2022, Bumrah missed India’s next home assignment, the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy featuring five Tests due to a back injury, the same injury that forced him out of the WTC 2023 final against Australia at The Oval.

Apart from the 2023 World Test Championship final at a neutral venue, Bumrah has missed seven away Tests due to various injuries: two against England (2018), one against Australia (2021), two against Bangladesh (2022), and two against West Indies (2023).

Although Bumrah waited three years to make his home Test debut in 2021 (against England in Chennai), his participation in home series has increased recently. He has featured in eight of India's last 10 home Tests across three series - against England, Bangladesh, and New Zealand - all during the 2024 season.
