India captain Shubman Gill has started the tour of England with a bang. What records could he break by the end of it?

At Leeds, Gill began his stint as Test skipper in style, scoring 147 in his very first innings. In the second Test at Edgbaston, he outdid that effort and them some – making 269 in the first innings before backing it up with 161 in the second to become the first batter ever to record scores of 200-plus and 150-plus in the same Test match.

After two matches in this series, Gill's run tally sits at 585. With three still to come, he could break all sorts of records.

First, one of the simpler ones. For years, Sunil Gavaskar's 774 runs in the West Indies has been a benchmark for Indian batters. It's been over 50 years, and no one, not even Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli has been able to dethrone the original 'Little Master'.

Yashasvi Jaiswal joined Gavaskar in the 700-run club last year, but even he couldn't crack the top two. Gill needs 190 runs in three Tests to leave Sunny behind. That is potentially just over 30 runs per innings...

Next, onto captaincy. To topple this record would be an incredible feat in his very first series since taking on the role – and there's an illustrious name at the top. 226 more needed for Gill here, in three more Tests.

At the rate he's started, those runs could all come in a single innings. Not to mention that Gill would fit in nicely alongside (above, rather) Graham Gooch, Gavaskar, Gower and Garry.

Playing in one of the 'SENA' countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) is traditionally one of the most testing tours for an Asian batter. That effect has somewhat worn off in England in recent times, as pitches on the flatter side have been preferred by the home team.

That's not to diminish Gill's achievements so far, but it certainly helps here. Bradman (unsurprisingly) is on top of this list as well, having scored two double centuries and a triple century on that 1930 tour. The Don had two single-digit scores in seven innings then. Right now, Gill has one, to go with three triple-digit knocks. 390 in three Tests is still a stiff ask, but you never know.

Get rid of the filters.

974 isn't quite as iconic a number as 99.94, but real stat-heads have it burned into their brain. There would be a beautiful symbolism in this, if Gill managed to overtake Bradman in the fifth Test at the The Oval, the same venue as the final Test on the 1930 tour.

At 292.5 runs per Test currently, he is on track to finish with 1,462 runs in the series, give or take. But don't be silly. We'll settle for 1,000, Shubman.

Most centuries in a Test series

Current rank: 22nd

This is one list where Gill could rise quite rapidly. He has three centuries in four innings so far, and 20 of the players above him have scored four in an series (including Bradman in three separate series). At the top is West Indies' Clyde Walcott with five in a series, against Australia in 1955.

With potentially six innings left, three centuries to break this record is not all that outlandish.

At Edgbaston, Gill took second place here with a mammoth 430 runs. Given how long India eventually batted on after he was dismissed for 161 in the second innings, there's every chance he would already have gone past Gooch had he not mistimed a slog off Shoaib Bashir.

If the wickets continue to behave the way they have so far, you wouldn't put it past him getting this far again, and making it even further.
