Watch: Harry Brook was bowled by Akash Deep while attempting to sweep a yorker on day four of the Lord’s Test between England and India.
After high-intensity drama at the end of day three, England lost Ben Duckett early for 12. Mohammed Siraj drew first blood for India and was seen giving a send-off to the departed opener. A fired-up Siraj struck again, pinning vice-captain Ollie Pope lbw for 4 after India successfully overturned a not out decision upon referral.
Against Zak Crawley – who was at the centre of heated exchanges on day three – India tried something innovative: They asked wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel to stand up to the stumps. Nitish Kumar Reddy executed the plan perfectly, having Crawley caught at gully for a 49-ball 22.
The dismissal brought Brook in at No. 5 with England struggling at 50-3. India persisted with Jurel standing up to the stumps, but the No. 1-ranked Test batter launched a counterattack – especially against Akash Deep in the 20th over – hitting the last three balls (all bowled full) for 4, 4, and 6, with the first two ramped away to fine leg.
On the third ball of the 22nd over, Akash Deep bowled a full-length delivery that landed as a yorker. Harry Brook, misjudging the length, went for a sweep but missed, leaving his middle stump uprooted. The fast bowler, avenging his earlier beating, celebrated zealously as Brook walked back for a brisk 19-ball 23, which contained four fours and a six. England went to lunch at 98-4.
"Here’s the thing I don’t understand. He scooped really well earlier, but now he’s gone for a sweep," Kumar Sangakkara said on Sky Sports commentary.
"I wonder if they moved fine leg finer and he wanted to go squarer. That wasn’t a scoop – the shot he plays with ease – it was a sweep, normally played against spinners.
"That was way too much risk. Fifteen minutes to lunch, the counterattack had started. This isn't smart batting."
