Stand-in India captain Smriti Mandhana scored her maiden T20I century in the first match of her side's series against England in Nottingham today (June 28), becoming the first India player to score centuries in all three women's international formats.
Smriti Mandhana scores maiden T20I century
After being put into bat in the first T20I of the series, Mandhana opened the batting with Shafali Verma and immediately put England under pressure. She hit a four off her second ball at the crease, and hit consecutive boundaries in the second over of the game off Em Arlott. Her first six of the innings came off Sophie Ecclestone's first ball back into the side after missing the series against West Indies, slog-sweeping over the midwicket boundary. She brought up her half-century in the eight over of the game off 27 balls.
With India having reached the 100 mark off the first ball of the 11th over, Mandhana – who was standing in as captain for Harmanpreet Kaur for the game – reached her individual ton off just 51 balls. That's the second-fastest women's T20I century for India, with only Kaur having scored one quicker at 49 balls against New Zealand in 2018. Reaching the milestone also made Mandhana the first India player to score centuries in all three women's international formats, the fifth overall.
England pegged India back after Mandhana reached her century, with Harleen Deol dismissed two balls after for 43 off 23 balls. Lauren Bell then took two wickets in three balls before Ecclestone dismissed Mandhana, finding gentle turn and drawing the opener into a big shot, which was miscued to Nat Sciver-Brunt.
India finished their innings on 210-5, their highest T20I score outside of India and second highest of all time.
