Pakistan debutant quick slams nine sixes to equal New Zealand legend's world record in classic tail-end knock

Razaullah, who also has a first-class century to his name, walked in at No.9 following Ghazi Ghori's dismissal, and Mohammad Abbas joined him just two overs later with Pakistan going down to 318-8, still trailing by two runs in the final session of the day. The duo went on to add 121 runs together at almost run-a-ball to take the Test into the fourth day, with Razaullah being the aggressor even as Abbas scored 42 off 67.

The debutant speedster cleared the ropes for the first time off Josh Tongue, hitting one over square-leg to wipe off Pakistan’s deficit. He then took Gus Atkinson to the cleaners with three sixes in the an over. After England opted for the new ball, Razaullah sent Jofra Archer for two sixes in one over, the first of which brought up his fifty off 43 deliveries and the second took Pakistan to the 400-run mark, and extended their lead to 80.

Razaullah continued his assault with a monstrous six each in 90th and 91st overs, taking Pakistan's lead and the ninth-wicket partnership, both past the 100-run mark. Just when 10 minutes were left in the day’s play, Abbas holed out to backward point. Razaullah then hit his ninth six of the innings, taking down Dan Lawrence, but was stumped on the fourth delivery of the over while stepping out for another big one, thus bringing an end to Pakistan’s fightback for 449 and setting England 130 to win.

Earlier in the game, the visitors were bundled out for a 133 in the first innings with Tongue picking up four. England replied with 453, as Emilio Gay (60), Harry Brook (75), Dan Lawrence (65), Jamie Smith (69) and Ollie Robinson (50) all registered fifties. Razaullah was the pick of the bowlers with a four-wicket haul on debut, while also consistently clocking 140kph with the ball.

Azan Awais (59), Shaan Masood (95) and Babar Azam (76) showed some resistance in the second innings, before Razaullah and Abbas ensured England had to bat again in the Test.

Most sixes on Test debut: Razaullah joins Tim Southee at the top of the list

Razaullah’s entertaining innings of 81 comprised nine sixes, which took him on level with Tim Southee for the most sixes hit in an innings on Test debut. Southee held the record since 2008, when he smashed nine sixes against England in Napier in his debut Test.
