England became the first time to put more than 300 runs past a fellow full member side in a men's T20I at Old Trafford today (September 12), as Phil Salt led a chaotic blitz.
Having been put in to bat in Manchester, Harry Brook declared he would have batted had he won the toss, an assessment of the track's flatness which was instantly vindicated. Opening up with Salt, Jos Buttler hit the fastest T20I half-century ever for England, reaching his 50 off just 18 balls. He looked to have the same three figure record under threat, until he swept a ball from Bjorn Fortuin to Tristan Stubbs at backward square. Before he departed, however, he and Salt wracked up exactly 100 runs off the powerplay – an England record in a T20I.
Salt, however, was the star of the show. He was one ball slower than Buttler in bringing up his half-century, but did push on to three figures. He brought up his century from his 39th ball at the crease, overtaking Liam Livingstone's 42-ball record has the fastest T20I hundred for England.
Cameos from Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook meant England were still within reach of 300 at the end of their innings, on 284-2 going into the final over. A no ball from Kagiso Rabada helped their cause, and England finished on 304-2.
