England pacer Jofra Archer has surged up the ICC Men’s ODI bowling rankings after his excellent showing in the series against South Africa.

Jofra Archer rises to No.3 in ICC ODI bowling rankings

Archer picked up eight wickets across the three games, including two four-fors in the last two, and has moved 16 places to third overall. He now sits only 26 rating points behind No.1 Keshav Maharaj, who held his spot after taking eight wickets of his own in the same series.

Playing his first ODI of the summer, Archer went wicketless in the first ODI at Leeds, where he bowled five overs for eight runs. He picked up four wickets, but conceded 62 runs in the second game at Lord’s, before bowling a sensational spell at Southampton. South Africa were bowled out for just 72, falling to the largest defeat in men’s ODIs, as Archer bowled a threatening spell of 4-18 in nine overs.

It is Archer’s career-best ranking in the bowling charts, beating his previous high of No.8, achieved in September 2020.

Fellow England bowler Adil Rashid also made progress, rising seven places to eighth after picking up eight wickets at an average of nine. The bowling rankings continued to be led by Maharaj, who picked up two wickets apiece in the last two games. He had also taken 4-22 in the first ODI.

Joe Root enters the top 20 for the first time in three years

England’s Joe Root returned to the top 20 of the ODI batting rankings for the first time since July 2022, after scores of 61 and 100 in the last two games. He was No.14 on July 2022, before falling out of the top 20 for the next three years. Root has now climbed five places to 19th.

Jos Buttler also made progress, rising seven spots to 35th following knocks of 62 and an unbeaten 61. South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke jumped 44 positions to 64th after becoming the first player to register a half-century in each of his first five ODI innings.

England youngster Jacob Bethell is right behind him in 65th place after surging 56 places in the latest update.
