Root celebrates after scoring 166 vs WI

England's Joe Root struck a career-best 166* against the West Indies at Cardiff: along the way, he also became one of the fastest ever to 7,000 ODI runs.

Root, batting at No.3, hit an unbeaten 166 as England managed to chase down 309 with three wickets to spare. Notably, no other English batter crossed 49, as Root's knock headlined their chase, losing a cluster of wickets on either side of the stupendous effort. The side was 133-5 at one point, but Root, along with Will Jack at No.7, kept them in the hunt, eventually crossing the line in the 49th over.

Along the way, Root also became the first England player to cross 7,000 ODI runs, overhauling Eoin Morgan's career tally of 6,957. He also became the fifth-fastest ever to reach the landmark among all batters, taking 168 innings in all.

It took Root 12 years and 141 days to achieve the feat, having made his ODI debut back in January 2013. From the start of 2020 until the end of 2022, he played just 15 ODIs, but has since played 21.

Root's knock was the fifth-highest individual score for England in ODIs, sitting behind Robin Smith's 167* against Australia in 1993. Ben Stokes still holds on to the top spot with his epic 182 against New Zealand from two years ago. It was England's highest individual score against the West Indies, beating Jos Buttler's 150 in 2019.

Root has now hit 12 centuries at No.3, as many as Brian Lara, and averages 51.65 in the position. His 18 centuries overall are comfortably the highest for England.

In chases, Root now has the most ODI centuries for England (9), beating Jason Roy's tally of eight.
