England pacer Gus Atkinson will be unavailable for the ODI series against West Indies with a hamstring strain.

Gus Atkinson ruled out of West Indies ODIs with injury

On Tuesday (May 27), a press release from the ECB read: “England and Surrey seamer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the upcoming Metro Bank One-Day Internationals against the West Indies due to a right hamstring strain.

“Atkinson sustained the injury during England’s Rothesay Test victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last week. He will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team. No replacement will be added to the ODI squad.

“England, led by captain Harry Brook, will contest three Metro Bank One Day Internationals (ODIs).The ODI series gets underway with the opening match on Thursday 29 May at Edgbaston.”

Atkinson bowled 19.2 overs in all during England's innings victory in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe, including just six in the second innings.

The pacer is coming off a breakout first season in Test cricket, which saw him pick up 52 wickets in 11 Tests. His ODI career has been rather more quiet thus far, with 13 wickets in 11 matches, at an average of just over 40. He was part of the England side that was knocked out of the 2025 Champions Trophy at the group stage, following which captain Jos Buttler stepped down.

When will ENG vs WI ODIs begin?

The three-match series will start on May 29, with the second and third games to be played on June 1 and June 3. This will be Harry Brook's first series as England's new white-ball captain, and is particularly important as far as qualification for the 2027 World Cup is concerned. West Indies are coming off a 1-1 draw with Ireland in Ireland, after they lost the first match and the second was washed out.

England's IPL players – Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler and Will Jacks – will miss the playoffs of that tournament as they return for this series. The three ODIs will be followed by three T20Is on June 6, June 8 and June 10.
