Indai and Pakistan survived scares, while West Indies registered a comfortable win on the opening day of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Here's the updated T20 World Cup points table after day one.
T20 World Cup 2026: Day one recap
Pakistan vs Netherlands
Pakistan were pushed close by Netherlands in the first match of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Choosing to field first, Pakistan restricted Netherlands to 147 after they were 127-4 at the 16-over mark. Salman Mirza picked 3-24, while Mohammad Nawaz (2-38), Abrar Ahmed (2-23), and Saim Ayub (2-7) shared two wickets apiece.

In response, Pakistan were cruising at 98-2 in 11 overs, when they collapsed to 114-7 in 16.1 overs. In the last two overs, Pakistan needed 29 to win, with Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Afridi at the crease. Ashraf came in clutch, smashing 28 off eight balls from thereon to save Pakistan from a shock defeat.
West Indies vs Scotland
West Indies started off slow in the powerplay against Scotland at the Eden Gardens, but recovered to put up 182-5 on the board, riding on Shimron Hetmyer's 64 off 26 and Sherfane Rutherford's 26 off 13. Scotland lost three wickets inside the first six overs in their run-chase, but a 78-run fourth-wicket partnership between Richie Berrington (42 off 24) and Tom Bruce (35 off 28) gave them hope.

Those hopes were crushed with Berrington's wicket and Romario Shepherd's hat-trick as West Indies bowled out Scotland for 147, winning by 35 runs.
India vs USA
India walked into the tournament as outright favourites. But they were rocked early by USA. Put in to bat, India collapsed to 46-4 and then to 77-6. But Suryakumar Yadav played a captain's knock to take India to safety, before the bowlers put in a clinical performance to seal the deal. Arshdeep Singh picked up 2-18, Axar Patel 2-24, Varun Chakravarthy 1-24, and Mohammed Siraj 3-29, as India won by 29 runs.
