Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by five runs in the final match of the T20 World Cup Super Eights group two. Here's the points table after the game.
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka but fail to make World Cup semifinals
After Pakistan were put in to bat at Pallekele, they knew they had to win by a margin of roughly 65 runs in order to overtake New Zealand's net run rate and qualify for the semifinals. They made three changes to their XI, which included dropping Babar Azam.
Openers Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan put on 176, the highest partnership in T20 World Cup history, as Farhan scored his second century of the tournament. But a flurry of wickets towards the back end meant they ended up on 212-8, a challenging score but potentially 10-15 runs short for them to qualify.
That meant they had to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 or fewer to qualify for the semis. Naseem Shah struck early to remove Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara was also dismissed in the Powerplay, but Pavan Rathnayake (58 off 37) held the innings together, keeping the run rate up.
On a good batting track, it was soon apparent that defending 147 would be extremely difficult. Sri Lanka eventually got past that mark in 15.5 overs, and finished on 207-6 thanks to an incredible late blitz from Dasun Shanaka (76* off 31), giving Pakistan a win but not enough of a net run rate boost to qualify for the semifinals.
