Opting to bat first, Afghanistan put on a solid first-wicket stand of 53 in 12.2 overs. Opener Osman Sadat’s dismissal with the team score on 117 brought Uzairullah Niazai out to bat, who then combined with Faisal Shinozada, tackling the Indian bowlers with ease.

The duo stitched together a 148-run stand for the third wicket, with both batters bringing up their respective fifties. By the 35th over, they were 170-2, but took on the attack in the next 15 overs that fetched 140 runs.

Faisal Shinozada scores sixth YODI hundred, joint-most among all batters

Shinozada, who scored his fifty in 49 deliveries, needed 37 more balls for his next 50 runs, bringing up his ton with the help of 14 fours. It was the 17-year-old’s sixth Youth ODI ton in 22 matches, taking him level with Pakistan’s Sami Aslam for the most hundreds in the format. Across 22 matches, Shinozada has scored 1,215 runs at 60.75, with three fifties. With this knock, he also crossed 400 runs in the edition, becoming the first batter to reach there this year.

At the other end, Niazai also reached his hundred, getting to the landmark in 85 balls, as Afghanistan crossed the 300-run mark for the second time in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup. It is the first time in this edition that a team has breached the 300-run mark more than once. They had earlier made 315-7 against Ireland last week.

Overall, nine other teams have scored multiple 300s in the competition, with the list led by India, who scored 300 on three occasions back in 2004. It was the first time since the 2018 edition that Afghanistan crossed 300 runs in a single edition, having not breached the milestone in 2020, 2022 or 2024.
