Before delving into the calculations, two things are worth a mention. If two teams are tied on points, the team with more wins gets priority. Net run rate comes third on sorting order. That puts India at an advantage. And secondly, there are predictions of rain in both afternoon and evening at Navi Mumbai on the day of the match. In other words, there is a chance of a washout.
If the match is indeed abandoned, India and New Zealand will both reach five points. India’s last game will be against Bangladesh and New Zealand’s against England.
For India to qualify after a washout against New Zealand, they have to match New Zealand’s performance in their respective last matches. In other words, if New Zealand beat England, India have to beat Bangladesh. If New Zealand-England is a washout, India will need one point from the Bangladesh game.
For New Zealand to qualify after a washout against India, they need to outperform India in their respective last matches.
But what if India and New Zealand both lose their respective last matches (and finish on five each)? In that case, Sri Lanka will qualify if they beat Pakistan in their last game.
