Fatima Sana and Nat Sciver-Brunt shake hands following World Cup washout

England survived an early scare against Pakistan after rain took away the possibility of a result in Colombo today (October 15). Here's what that's done to the Women's World Cup points table.

Pakistan thwarted by rain after early inroads

Pakistan decimated England's batting after choosing to bowl first in Colombo. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones fell within five balls of each other, both undone by hooping inswingers from Diana Baig and Fatima Sana respectively. Nat Sciver-Brunt managed just 4 off 10 balls before she too was bowled by an inswinger from Sana, and three balls later Heather Knight was pinned lbw.

That routed England's experienced core in the top-order, and their middle order provided little further resistance. Emma Lamb was bowled by Sadia Iqbal to make it six wickets in the powerplay. Sophia Dunkley made 11 off 21 before she too was fell to Iqbal, and Alice Capsey was pinned by Rameen Shamim for 16 off 43. That left England at 78-7 in the 24th over of the innings.

Shortly after Capsey was out, rain swept through Colombo, and kept the players off the field for almost two hours. The match resumed as a 31-over contest, and a critical innings of 33 from Charlie Dean gave England 133 to defend. DLS adjusted the target to 113.

Pakistan were 34-0 off 6.3 overs before the rain returned, with a washout declared shortly after.

The washout brings Pakistan's first point of the tournament, but they will have hoped for more after running through England early. England, however, have regained their place at the top of the table, and sit with Australia as the only sides still unbeaten in the tournament.
