Virat Kohli’s return to the ODI batting top spot and Josh Tongue’s meteoric rise among Test bowlers headlined the latest ICC player rankings update.
ICC ODI rankings: Kohli back to top, Rohit drops to third
At Vadodara, Daryl Mitchell scored 84, Rohit Sharma 26, and Kohli 93 as India beat New Zealand. As a result, Rohit dropped from 781 rating points to 775, while Kohli rose from 773 to 785 and Mitchell from 766 to 784. This resulted in the top three being rearranged: Kohli regained the top spot for the first time since March 28, 2021; Mitchell rose to second; and Rohit dropped to third.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill remained at fifth and Shreyas Iyer at 10th; KL Rahul rose one place to 11th; and 14th-placed Rachin Ravindra – who missed the game – now shares that position with Pathum Nissanka.
With two wickets, Mohammed Siraj jumped five places to joint 15th, while Ravindra Jadeja’s ordinary show resulted in a five-place drop. Kyle Jamieson’s valiant 4-41, on the other hand, resulted in a leap from 96th to 69th among bowlers and from 113th to 94th among all-rounders.
ICC Test rankings: Big leaps for Ashes performers
Jacob Bethell’s magnificent hundred at Sydney resulted in a leap from 77th to joint 52nd among Test batters. Travis Head and Steve Smith’s hundreds helped them climb one spot each, to third and fourth. Top-ranked Joe Root got a hundred as well to rise from 867 to 880 in ratings.
Among bowlers, Michael Neser (five wickets) rose from 54th to 47th; Beau Webster (three wickets) from 109th to joint 80th; and Josh Tongue (six wickets) from 30th to joint 21st. Pat Cummins (who missed the Test) and Mitchell Starc (who did not) dropped a place each, and are now fifth and third.
Webster made an unbeaten 71 as well, to soar 22 places on the all-rounders’ ranking to become joint 26th. Bethell got a wicket too, to go from 100th to joint 79th.
