New Zealand registered their first-ever ODI series victory in India, beating the hosts in the third ODI to clinch the series 2-1. Here are the latest ICC men's ODI team rankings following the series.
Few had given the touring New Zealand side the chance, with an almost second-string side named for the ODI series. But after three fiercely contested matches, they came out on top to close the gap with India at the top of the ICC men’s ODI team rankings.
India won the first match in Vadodara rather easily. After conceding a 117-run opening partnership, the hosts came back strongly to stop the Kiwis at 300. Virat Kohli’s 93 then took them home in the penultimate over.
Daryl Mitchell, who had fallen 16 short of a century in the first ODI, made up for it in the second game at Rajkot. After KL Rahul’s eighth hundred in the format took them to 284, Mitchell and Will Young (87) made easy work of the target. The all-rounder scored 131 off 117 to help the Kiwis win by seven wickets and take the series into the decider.
Mitchell then hit his third 50-plus score of the series and second hundred, playing a 137-run knock in the third match, while adding a record 219 runs with Glenn Phillips, who scored 106, for the fourth wicket. New Zealand were powered to 337 and India, despite Kohli’s 54th ODI century, never seemed favourites in the chase, losing by 41 runs in the end.
Mitchell, for his 352 runs in three games, was named the Player of the Series.
