South Africa pulled off one of their finest ODI run chases in Raipur, overhauling the target of 359 to win the second match of the three-game series and level it 1–1 against India.

Chasing India’s 358-5, South Africa were dealt an early blow when Quinton de Kock was dismissed in the fifth over. However, a fine century from Aiden Markram – his first since 2023 – and a 48-ball 46 from skipper Temba Bavuma steadied the ship, with the duo sharing a 101-run stand for the second wicket. Vital contributions from Matthew Breetzke (68 in 64) and Dewald Brevis (54 in 34) took South Africa over the 300-run mark, while Corbin Bosch’s 15-ball 29 took the team home, in 49.2 overs. In doing so, they matched the record for the highest successful run chase against India in ODIs, held previously by Australia, who also chased 359 in Mohali in 2019.

The game had begun with India losing their 20th toss in a row in the format, but Virat Kohli’s second consecutive hundred raised hopes of a total above the 400-run mark. India were 284-4 after 39.1 overs when he was dismissed after a 195-run stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who brought up his maiden ton in the format. However, India slowed down thereafter, managing just 74 in the last 65 balls of their innings.

South Africa break several records in epic chase

South Africa’s 362/6 now ranks as the joint sixth-highest successful run chase in ODI history, in a list they themselves lead courtesy of the 438 they famously hunted down against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006. The Raipur chase is also their highest successful run chase away from home, surpassing the 328 achieved against Australia in Harare in 2014.

It stands as the joint third-highest successful chase outside home conditions, alongside Australia’s 359 in Mohali in 2019, with only the Netherlands’ 370 in Dundee (2025) and England’s 361 in Bridgetown (2019) higher. By reaching 362/6, South Africa also equalled India’s highest successful run chase in ODIs — the 362/1 they completed against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
