Why are West Indies players wearing black armbands?

Cricket West Indies confirmed that the players will wear black armbands on the first day of the Test as a tribute to former player Bernard Julien, who passed away last week.

Julien was a member of the West Indies side that won the 1975 World Cup, picking up 4-20 against Sri Lanka and 4-27 against New Zealand in the semi-final. He also made a valuable 26 off 37 deliveries in the final against Australia while batting at No.8. It helped his team post 291-8 as Australia won by 17 runs, with his knock proving crucial in the end.

Overall, the left-arm quick played 24 Tests, picking up 50 wickets and scoring 866 runs with two centuries. In 12 ODIs, he picked up 18 wickets, 10 of which came in the 1975 World Cup. Julien also played for Kent between 1970 and 1977, picking up 198 scalps and scoring 2,056 runs in 80 first-class matches. In 83 List A games, he made 1,092 runs and also bagged 112 wickets.

His last international appearance was in 1977 against Pakistan.
