Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put on 58 for the first wicket, before Rahul was stumped for 38, after stepping out to left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. Sai Sudharsan then joined Jaiswal in the middle, as the pair went on to bat for the bulk of the day.

Jaiswal brought up a half-century off 82 balls shortly after lunch, and Sudharsan did the same later in the session. The opener stepped on the gas after reaching 50, and made his next fifty runs off 63 balls to reach a seventh Test century. Sudharsan fell for 87 after tea, but shortly afterwards, Jaiswal went past 150 in the company of Gill.
