Catching up to Sachin: Virat Kohli equals Tendulkar's world record after breathtaking ton in West Indies series opener

Kohli got to the three-figure mark for the 60th time in List A cricket, taking 338 innings to get to the landmark. He equalled Tendulkar, who took 538 innings to the milestone. The 37-year-old also became only the second batter to scale 15,000 ODI runs, and also became the fastest to the mark, taking 303 innings to get there as compared to Tendulkar’s 377.

Walking out to bat at the stroke of the 12th over with a 296-run target to overhaul, Kohli took just four deliveries to reach double figures, and kept the scoreboard ticking with skipper Shubman Gill, who also registered a 108-ball 110, his 10th ODI century.

India’s No.3 got to the 50-run mark off 40 deliveries with a handsome six down the ground in the 27th over. He then cut loose, taking Alzarri Joseph for three consecutive fours in the 29th over, the second of which got him past the 15,000-run mark in ODI cricket.

Kohli and Gill stitched together 151 runs off 132 deliveries for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed at the stroke of the 34th over. The chase-master continued his onslaught, getting to his third-fastest ton in the format off just 74 deliveries with a six against Gudakesh Motie in the 38th over.

Kohli then scored his next 39 runs off just 14 deliveries, and finished with two consecutive sixes for an unbeaten 139 off 88. Notably, Kohli hit nine sixes in the match, his most in an ODI innings, coupled with 10 fours.

Earlier in the game, the West Indies rode on Justin Greaves’ maiden ODI century (101 off 108), before Kuldeep Yadav dismantled their middle-order with a four-wicket haul, keeping them down to 295-7. The hosts, then got there comfortably with eight wickets and 50 balls to spare, going 1-0 up in the series.
