A plethora of records was broken during the second ODI between India and the West Indies at Guwahati.
The West Indies posted 405-7 in the second ODI of the three-match series, at Guwahati. However, India made the total look puny, chasing the target with 39 balls and eight wickets in hand. A plethora of records were broken over the course of this incredibly high-scoring match.
Shai Hope’s 104 was his 20th ODI century, which put him at second place on the all-time list for the West Indies. Hope went past Brian Lara (19), and is behind only Chris Gayle (25).
When Amir Jangoo followed John Campbell and Hope to his hundred, it marked the sixth instance of three batters (first for the West Indies) scoring hundreds in the same men’s ODI innings.
This was the first time the West Indies amassed 400 in an ODI. Among Full Members, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ireland are the only ones to have reached 400 in the format.
Rohit Sharma became the seventh batter and the second Indian to reach the 12,000-mark in ODIs. Only Virat Kohli (242) had taken fewer innings than Rohit’s 282 to reach the landmark.
Shubman Gill and Rohit later scored hundreds in the match, making it the first ODI with five hundreds. In all List A cricket, the only other instance was Baroda versus Hyderabad in the 2025/26 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Rohit and Gill put on 255 for the first wicket, the second-highest opening stand for India in men’s ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s 258 against Kenya at Paarl in 2001. This was also India’s seventh-highest partnership for any wicket but their highest in a chase. India’s previous highest partnership while batting second was 246 for the second wicket between Rohit and Kohli in 2018, also against the West Indies in Guwahati.
Gill took 89 balls to reach his 150, making it the fastest for India and the ninth-fastest across teams in ODIs. The previous Indian record was with Ishan Kishan (103 balls against Bangladesh in Chittagong 2022).
India took only 29.1 overs to reach 300, making it the fastest instance in ODI history. They went past South Africa’s 32.2-over record against Austalia at Johannesburg in 2006.
Gill took 117 balls to reach his double hundred, making it the fastest in ODI history. The previous record was with Kishan (126 balls in the above match). In all List A cricket, this was the joint fourth-fastest double ton and the second fastest by an Indian (N Jagadeesan took 114 balls for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh at Bengaluru in 2022). It also made Gill the second player to score multiple ODI double hundreds, after Rohit (3).
India became the first team to reach 400 on nine separate occasions in men’s ODIs. They went past South Africa (8). They took 43 overs, equalling the record for the fastest 400 set by England against Australia at Nottingham in 2018.
Gill finished on 223 not out, the third-highest ODI score, after Rohit (264 against Sri Lanka, Kolkata 2014) and Martin Guptill (237 not out against the West Indies, Wellington 2015).
Gill’s 223 not out was also the highest in an ODI chase (he went past Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at Mumbai in 2023). In fact, it was also the highest in a List A chase (Soumya Sarkar used to hold that record, with 208 not out for Abahani Limited against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at Savar in 2019).
Gill’s 223 not out is now the highest by a captain in men’s ODIs (he went past Virender Sehwag’s 219 against the West Indies at Indore in 2011). In List A cricket, it was the fourth-highest by a captain and the second-highest by an Indian captain (after Prithvi Shaw’s 227 not out for Mumbai against Puducherry in 2021).
India’s successful chase of 406 was the second-highest in ODI history. South Africa had famously chased 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006.
The 811 runs in the ODI are now the third-highest match aggregate in men’s ODI history, after 872 (South Africa vs Australia, Johannesburg 2006) and 825 (India vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot 2009).
