After Gujarat Titans posted 214-4 in the rescheduled final of IPL 2023, it rained again in Ahmedabad after Chennai Super Kings reached 4-0 in three balls – here’s what the DLS targets are if the game resumes.

Gujarat amassed 214-4 after MS Dhoni opted to bowl in the final, making the title holders favourites for the 2023 crown in the IPL betting. Shubman Gill made a 20-ball 39, while Wriddhiman Saha made 54 in 39 balls. Gill finished IPL 2023 with 890 runs, and will claim the Orange Cap after the final (Devon Conway has the most runs for Chennai, but he is 265 behind Gill).

But the real onslaught came from Sai Sudharsan, whose 47-ball 96 included eight fours and six sixes. Sudharsan’s score is the third-highest in an IPL final.

Mohammed Shami began Gujarat’s defence with two dot balls before Ruturaj Gaikwad placed the third ball behind point for four. The skies opened immediately, and a puddle formed near a practice pitch even before the ground staff could reach.

The rain has stopped, but despite the hard work put in by the ground staff, overs are almost certain to be deducted. As per the Laws of Cricket, Chennai need to bat for at least five overs for a match to happen, of which they have faced three balls.

There have been some confusion over the adjusted targets as per the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern [DLS] Method, presumably because the two have a similar feel as the par score.

The two, while similar, are not quite the same. Par score is what a team needs to have achieved when rain stops play, which is why there is always a wicket mentioned along with it. For example, if the match stopped after five overs, Chennai needed to have scored 43-0, 49-1, 56-2, etc to win the match.

The adjusted target is not dependent on wickets, because it is what a team needs to score after play resumes.

Chennai Super Kings’ adjusted targets read:

66 after 5 overs
78 after 6 overs
90 after 7 overs
101 after 8 overs
112 after 9 overs
123 after 10 overs
133 after 11 overs
143 after 12 overs
153 after 13 overs
162 after 14 overs
171 after 15 overs
181 after 16 overs
190 after 17 overs
198 after 18 overs
207 after 19 overs
