Delhi Capitals – currently at the bottom of the points table – lost their top five inside five overs, four of them to Shami, and one to a run out. The dismantling began off the first ball itself, when Shami had Phil Salt caught at cover. David Warner was bizarrely run out the next over, before Shami struck again, dismissing Rossouw, who was playing his first game in nearly a month.

It was a peach that pitched on middle-and-leg, and seamed away from the left-hander – Rossouw could only prod at it, managing a thick edge that flew behind. Wriddhiman Saha did the rest behind the sticks, and Shami had his second scalp.

On commentary, Nick Knight termed it “one of the balls of the tournament”, praising Shami for his seam position.

“I’m going to nominate that as one of the balls of the tournament,” Knight said. “I don’t think we’re going to see too many better. Look at the seam position. I don’t think you can do much more than that and just hope that you miss it. Late movement away. He’s so so good.”

Shami finished the powerplay with two more scalps, sending back Priyam Garg and Manish Pandey to put Delhi in serious trouble. At the end of the fifth over, their score stood at 23-5.
