Mumbai, needing a win to stay alive in the competition, sent Sunrisers in to bat first. Hyderabad got off to a fine start, making 140 runs for the first wicket at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai bounced back and restricted SRH to 200-5, but they were dealt an early blow after Ishan Kishan was dismissed in the third over of the innings.

Green, whose batting position has been shuffled around in the last few games, walked out at No.3 and immediately made his intentions clear as he smashed two fours from his first two deliveries, before making 22 runs in his next eight balls.

The Australia all-rounder got to his fifty in only 20 deliveries and combined with Rohit Sharma to stitch together a 128-run stand for the second wicket. The dismissal of Mumbai’s skipper did not stop him from taking the aggressive route, as he helped Mumbai nearer to the finish line. He reached 94 in 43 balls, with the five-time champions needing eight runs from the last 18 balls, with Suryakumar Yadav on strike for the 18th over.

Yadav ran a single off the first ball, giving Green the strike, and also the opportunity to score his first T20 ton. He hit a four off the second ball of the over, before running a single to get to 99*. Surya handed him the strike once more by running one, and Green finally got to his hundred with a single which was also the winning run.

His innings was laced with eight sixes and as many fours, as he became the ninth centurion of IPL 2023.

Mumbai are now on 16 points and will be relying on the result of the RCB-GT clash for a place in the playoffs.
