Watch: Gujarat Titans pulled off a dramatic victory over Lucknow Super Giants, taking four wickets in four balls in the final over to win a low-scoring thriller today (April 22).
After Gujarat Titans made just 135 from their 20 overs, including Hardik Pandya’s slowest IPL fifty (making 66 from 50 deliveries), LSG looked to make light work of the chase.
Lucknow skipper KL Rahul looked to take his team over the line with a measured fifty, propped up by scores of 24 and 23 from Kyle Mayers and Krunal Pandya respectively.
With nine wickets in hand, requiring 30 runs off 35 balls, LSG’s chase slowed down and suddenly fell apart.
The final over, bowled by Mohit Sharma, began with the home side needing 12 runs to win. What the Lucknow fans saw next was a total capitulation.
KL Rahul was dismissed for 68 from the second ball of the over, holing out to Jayant Yadav and deep backward-square leg before Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was dismissed for a golden duck – courtesy of a smart David Miller grab at long on.
Suddenly, LSG needed 10 from 3 and Mohit would continue to find his lengths – Ayush Badoni falling the next ball scrambling for an audacious two as GT completed their team hat-trick. Deepak Hooda would suffer the same fate the next ball and the game was out of sight.
Captain KL Rahul, speaking after the game, said: “I don’t know how this has happened and it’s all happened so fast. This is cricket and it keeps reminding us that the game is never won until the last ball. I still can’t put a finger on it and say where we went wrong.
“We had the game in our pockets and we let it slip… This is going to sting us for a while”.
