MI had elected to bat on what looked a slightly dry surface. They got off to a decent start, with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma getting a few boundaries away. The pair, though, fell in quick succession, leaving Cam Green and Suryakumar Yadav to do the heavy lifting.
Green and Suryakumar got MI into a position of strength at the halfway stage, but LSG kept chipping away at the wickets. MI eventually reached 182-8, largely thanks to their Impact Player Nehal Wadhera’s 12-ball 23.
Chasing 183, LSG needed to get off to a blazing start. Their attempts, though, where thwarted by Madhwal in the second over. He bowled on a length outside off stump, enticing Prerak Mankad to throw his hands at it: the mistimed slice went straight to deep backward point.
LSG recovered thereafter and were 68-2 after eight overs. Captain Krunal Pandya fell in the ninth over, prompting LSG to send in Ayush Badoni. At that stage, the match was in the balance.
Madhwal’s two-wicket salvo in the 10th over, though, turned the scales completely in MI’s favour. With the fourth ball of the 10th over, he rushed Badoni for pace and sent off stump flying out of the ground. Bowling from round the wicket, he got to straighten the next ball to find Nicholas Pooran’s edge en route to Kishan.
But Madhwal was not done. He returned to dismiss Ravi Bishnoi before cleaning up Mohsin Khan to pick up his maiden five-wicket haul in the IPL – and the first in the and send MI into Qualifier 2.
Madhwal has been superb for MI in IPL 2023, picking up 13 wickets in seven matches at an average of 12.85, economy rate of 7.77 and a strike rate of 9.92. Even in MI’s last league fixture, he bagged a four-wicket haul to help them post a crucial win. If online betting is your thing, Mumbai Indians are currently 13/5 to win the competition with Betway.
