In a must-win fixture for RCB, Kohli shone with the bat and scored his seventh IPL hundred in the first innings, taking them to a competitive total virtually on his own. It wasn’t to be enough, as Gill, who idolises Kohli, out-batted him to notch up his second successive hundred in the IPL and take Gujarat Titans over the line in a clinical run-chase.

Gill came into this game on the back of his maiden IPL hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad a week back, and his confidence was visible right from the start. He pulled a misdirected short ball by Wayne Parnell for four to start things off. When Parnell corrected his length to bowl a dangerous inswinger, the alert Gill on-drove over mid-on for four.

From slog sweeps to short-arm jabs over mid-wicket to straight hits over the sight-screen – Gill’s 52-ball 104 not out had everything. He reached his hundred and finished the game by depositing a length ball by Parnell over long-on, his eighth six of the night.

Gill has played several big innings since last year, but the hallmark of this knock was that his strike rate almost always hovered around 200. He never let the pressure build beyond a certain point, which was evident with the required rate never looking too daunting. And he did it all with a cold, steely look in his eyes.

With this defeat, RCB’s campaign in IPL 2023 came to a close and Mumbai Indians became the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs.
