As is the norm, the CSK squad did a lap of honour around the MA Chidambaram Stadium after their final league fixture, against Kolkata Knight Riders. The players acknowledged the crowd, cheered and greeted the thousands of fans who had stayed back, despite the six-wicket loss to KKR. The CSK players through team memorabilia into the stands – including MS Dhoni, who shot tennis balls with a racquet into the stands.

Commentator Sunil Gavaskar, who has spoken about his admiration for Dhoni several times, was on the field as the lap circled around. In a moment of mirth, Gavakar, all of 70, ran, breaking into the lap of honour, much like a fan. Dhoni, prompt as always, greeted him and ended up signing his shirt with a marker.

The Chennai Super Kings are currently second on the points table, but haven’t been guaranteed a playoff spot yet.
