Watch: Tilak Varma continued his exceptional showing in IPL 2023, producing yet another fiery cameo to pump life into Mumbai Indians’ innings, during their IPL 2023 fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Tilak has scored at least 20 in each of his IPL 2023 innings so far, invariably coming in the middle overs and playing match-defining cameos. Against Hyderabad, he walked in at No.5 at the fall of Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket. At that point, Mumbai’s innings stood at 95-3 in 11.3 overs and were in need of a shift of gears. In 17 deliveries, Tilak smashed 37 – two fours and four sixes included – playing a key part in taking Mumbai Indians to 192-5 in 20 overs.

Two of those sixes came off back-to-back Marco Jansen deliveries – the penultimate ball of the 15th over was muscled over the deep square-leg fence. He picked the off-cutter and swung it baseball style to the leg-side with a neat, 82-metre strike. Next ball, Jansen kept it full and outside off: Tilak sat on one knee and swat it over the bowler’s head for another six. The over generated 21 runs for MI.

The 20-year-old Tilak, who was part of India’s 2020 U19 World Cup squad, is widely regarded as one of the finest young talents in India, and has constructed fine IPL numbers across the last two seasons. In the current Orange Cap list, Tilak is ranked at 7, with only top-order batters above him in the run charts. His IPL 2023 numbers currently read: 214 runs @ 53.50, strike rate: 158.51.
