Punjab batted first, and once again enjoyed a brisk start, with Prabhsimran Singh scoring his fifth fifty of the season. They were cruising at 107-1 in the 12th over, but a collapse saw them reduced to 123-5 within the next two overs. Azmatullah Omarzai revived the innings, with 38 off 17 before impact player Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett took them to 200.

In reply, MI also got off to a quick start, largely through Ryan Rickelton, who was dismissed for a 23-ball 48. Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir then fell in quick succession, leaving Tilak with the task of taking the team through. Sherfane Rutherford’s struggle ended for a 21-ball 20, and Mumbai were left needing 50 off the last three overs.

Tilak Varma maintains perfect record when unbeaten in T20 run chases

Tilak, who was batting on 45 off 24, smoked two sixes and a four off the next over, bowled by Marco Jansen, to ease the pressure, with 22 coming off it. He received able support from Will Jacks as the duo took 13 off the penultimate over bowled by Arshdeep Singh, before three sixes off Xavier Bartlett’s last over sealed the deal when 15 were required.

This was the 22nd time that Tilak remained unbeaten during a T20 chase, having taken his team to a win on all 22 occasions, the joint-most in men's T20 cricket, alongside Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill. In addition, James Vince has taken his team to victory 29 out of 30 times he has remained not out, with one no-result.

Six players, with a minimum of 20 not outs, have a 100 per cent record of taking their team through in winning chases when they stayed unbeaten. Of these six, Tilak and Sean Ervine are the only ones to have never opened the batting while doing so.
