Punjab Kings (PBKS) started the IPL 2026 season on a high, beating Gujarat Titans (GT) – here’s how the points table stacks up after the game.
Punjab Kings stutter but get over the line against Gujarat Titans at Mullanpur
After losing out on the title last season, PBKS started the 2026 campaign with a tricky win over GT. Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and invited Shubman Gill’s side to bat first.
GT never quite got ahead of the game, losing Sai Sudharsan inside the powerplay. Gill looked in decent touch but fell for a 27-ball 39. Jos Buttler’s tough run with the bat continued as he was dismissed for a sluggish 33-ball 38. None of the other batters could make a sizeable contribution as GT got to 162-6 in 20 overs.
In reply, PBKS raced away with the chase despite losing Priyansh Arya early on. They were cruising at 110-2, with Cooper Connolly and Shreyas Iyer at the crease and looking threatening. However, Iyer’s wicket triggered a collapse as PBKS were reduced to 118-6.
However, Connolly held on, completing his maiden IPL fifty on debut and, despite a late hiccup, eventually saw the team through with an unbeaten 72-run knock. Prasidh Krishna was the pick of the bowlers as his arrival as an impact player in the 13th over changed the game, but GT fell just short. He finished with figures of 3-29 off his four overs.
