Delhi Capitals (DC) lost out on a run due to a player review loophole in their one-run IPL 2026 defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) on Wednesday, April 8, resurfacing a much-discussed talking point.
Batting first, Gujarat posted a healthy 210 on the board, with Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar all hitting fifties. In reply, DC started strongly, with KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka adding 76 runs for the first wicket in 8.1 overs. Nissanka fell first for a 24-ball 41, bringing Nitish Rana into the middle.
Nitish Rana’s dismissal was overturned after DRS, but DC weren’t awarded the run
Rana was adjudged lbw by the umpire just three balls into his innings as he tried a reverse sweep off Rashid Khan. He reviewed the decision immediately, Ultra-Edge showed the ball had brushed his bat, and the decision was overturned.
But the one run that he ran with Rahul at the other end didn’t count, as the ball was deemed dead in accordance with the IPL Playing Conditions. “If following a Player Review request, an original decision of Out is changed to Not out, then the ball is still deemed to have become dead when the original decision was made,” the clause reads.
“The batting side, while benefiting from the reversal of the dismissal, shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery had the on-field umpire originally made a Not out decision.”
This wasn't the first time the LBW-dead ball loophole came into play, and certainly would not be the last.

Delhi eventually went on to lose the match by one run, with David Miller failing to get two off the last two deliveries after doing all the hard work to drag the side that far. Rana, on the other hand, fell to Rashid just two balls after the decision was overturned. Rahul was the side’s top scorer with a 52-ball 92, while Rashid was named the Player of the Match for returning figures of 3-17 from his four overs.
