Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has been penalised for ‘disobeying’ the umpires twice during his side’s IPL 2026 win over Mumbai Indians (MI).

Tim David sanctioned for refusing to hand the ball to umpires during RCB vs MI

David played an impactful knock of 34 off 18 to power RCB to a mammoth 240-4, with Phil Salt (78 off 36) and Rajat Patidar (53 off 20) making crucial contributions as well. MI didn’t threaten to successfully overhaul the target at any point during their chase, and lost by 18 runs.

During his knock, David was spotted inspecting the ball after it was changed during the 18th over, and despite repeated request from the umpires, did not return it. He even threw it up to check if the seam was in place even as the officials asked him to return the ball. The Australia batter repeated the same during the last over of RCB’s innings.

He has subsequently been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials. David did not contest the match referee’s decision and accepted the penalties. Notably, accumulating four to seven demerit points would lead to a one-match suspension.

“David was found to have breached Article 2.4 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘disobeying an umpire’s instruction during a match,’ an IPL media advisory on the incident read. “The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB’s batting innings. He wanted to have a look at the ball and did not hand it over despite being repeatedly asked to do so. The second incident occurred during the 20th over (19.2), when he again did not hand over the ball to the umpires, amounting to repeated failure to comply with the instructions or directives of the umpires.”
