Ireland created history, beating world champions India 2-0 in the two-T20I series. Here's how the ICC team rankings look like after the result.
Ireland beat India by one run in the second T20I on Sunday, June 28, to complete their first-ever series win over a full-member side since defeating Zimbabwe in December 2023 in a three-match rubber. They had also never defeated India in a T20I before the series, but now have two wins over them.
Few expected them to take down the defending champions, especially with a much-depleted side. But debutants Matt Hollard and Jai Moondra stepped up, taking 11 wickets between them in the two matches to blow India away.
Latest ICC men’s T20I team rankings after Ireland stun India
Ireland jumped from 12th to 11th in the latest ICC men’s T20I rankings, displacing Zimbabwe, after clean-sweeping the top-ranked side. They also gained six rating points, thereby reducing the gap between them and the tenth-placed Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, India have lost three rating points and have come down from 275 to 272. Despite the series defeat, they remain on top of the rankings, still 10 points ahead of second-placed England who have 262 points. The top-two ranked sides are set to face off in a five-T20I series, starting July 1.
Australia are ranked third, while New Zealand and South Africa complete the top five.
