Liam McCarthy concedes 81 runs on T20I debut against West Indies

The third and final T20I between the teams in Bready was the only one to get underway, after the first two had been washed out. Ireland skipper Paul Stirling won the toss and chose to put West Indies in to bat.

Openers Evin Lewis (91) and Shai Hope (51) lay the platform for their side with a stunning 122-run stand in just 10.3 overs. After a couple of quick wickets in the middle overs, it was eventually debutant Keacy Carty (49* off 22) and Romario Shepherd (19* off 6) that provided the finishing touches to power the Men in Maroon to a mammoth 256-5.

The day was particularly unfortunate for Ireland debutant Liam McCarthy. The score was 45-0 in four overs when he came on to bowl, and his first two deliveries were carted for six by Hope as he conceded 21 off his first over. His second, the ninth of the innings, was no better as Lewis hit him for a six and four fours in a 24-run over.

McCarthy's third and fourth overs were his joint-cheapest of the day, going for 18 runs each, including five fours and two sixes in all. By the end of his spell, he had conceded 81 runs – the most in a men's T20I by any player from a Full Member nation. Overall, this ranks second after The Gambia's Musa Jobarteh's 93 against Zimbabwe last year. The previous record-holder for Ireland was Barry McCarthy, who conceded 69 against Afghanistan in 2017.

Ireland set unwanted Full Member men's T20I record

McCarthy may have had the worst day of the Irish bowlers, but only Matthew Humphreys could claim to have a good one, having taken 2-16 in his four overs. Every other bowler conceded 50 runs or more – Mark Adair (1-52), Barry McCarthy (1-55), Ben White (1-50) and Liam McCarthy.

With four bowlers conceding 50 or more, Ireland set another dubious Full Member record. The only other occasion which has seen as many bowlers conceded 50-plus in a men's T20I is The Gambia's match against Zimbabwe in October 2024 – five bowlers conceded over 50, with one, Ismaila Tamba, conceding 24 from a solitary over.
