Watch: Ali Orr may have just announced himself as the unluckiest batter in world cricket, after being run out at the non-striker’s end for the third time in as many County Championship games.

The Sussex opener, who enjoyed a bumper breakthrough year in 2022, had got himself in with 26 runs from 33 deliveries on day three in Hove. After scoring 361 in the first innings, Sussex had bowled out Yorkshire for 298 and found themselves 41-0, with their exciting top order duo of Tom Haines and Orr at the crease.

Yorkshire paceman Ben Coad pitched up the first ball of the 11th over to Haines, who duly drove straight. Coad reached to stop the travelling leather and in turn, deflected it onto the stumps, leaving Orr scrambling to make his ground.

A despairing Orr looked up to see the finger raised, before putting his head in his hands in sheer disbelief.

It comes after the exciting 22-year-old suffered the same fate by Durham’s Ben Raine at the County Ground in their 2023 County Championship opener, as well as being cruelly dismissed for 198 via the fingertips of Ajaz Patel in the final game of last season. That astonishing innings came from just 174 balls, and Orr will have felt robbed of a maiden first-class double ton to cap off a fine season.
